OMG.
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, Kara.
When she found that beacon, and Leoben found the tail of her ship, and then SHE SAW HER OWN BODY with THE RING and HER DOGTAG, my heart was in my throat. Oh, Kara. What happened to you out there? What have the gods done to you? Are you Aurora? Are you a Cylon? Are you going to be really really frakked up now, even moreso than before?
Shippy sidenote - I LOVED that Lee was looking through Dee's stuff and then suddenly Kara was there, and she was there to talk, because something really horrible happened to her when, y'know, she had to CREMATE HERSELF (and I toats had Star Wars flashbacks, and that scene shot in silhouette made it SO incredibly haunting), and she actually wanted to TALK to LEE about it which, um, when has Kara ever wanted to talk? EVER? About anything? Especially about something traumatic that happened to her?
This was a huge step for my girl Starbuck - and then she takes ANOTHER huge step and immediately asks him what's wrong when she sees how bad he looks. The old Starbuck was selfish and self-centered and would not have stopped just because Lee didn't look so good. This shiny new Starbuck immediately switched gears and asked him what was wrong, and her concern was genuine and the way her face FELL when he said Dee's name, because that was probably the very last thing she ever thought he would say - oh, there is so much there beneath the surface between them.
I love that they are still best friends, and that they love each other and that they are finally COMFORTABLE with each other and the way they feel and confident that they know how the other feels. The lovey dovey stuff wouldn't make sense now. I really hope they focus on this bond they have now, on strengthening it and letting them really love and support each other. And then they can frak each other in the CAG's office. A LOT. LOTS AND LOTS OF FRAKKING. And somewhere in there they shoot stuff like in the preview.
Starbuck is far and away my favorite character, and I am so excited about this end of the journey. For all the characters, actually. I am so glad we are getting to see the aftermath, we are getting to see rock bottom. I love that the writers have acknowledged over and over that they are going to explore what happens to people when all their hopes and dreams are taken away - and man, I would have loved to be a fly on the wall in the writers' room for all this. That subject is fascinating to me, and I think we are in for a wild ride. WITH FRAKKING.
OH HAI GUYS, REMEMBER WHEN DEE KILLED HERSELF?
So I was spoiled for that, and I knew immediately when they focused so much on her at the beginning of the episode that she was a goner. Remember The Ties that Bind and how prominent Cally was? REMEMBER WHEN CALLY GOT THROWN OUT THE AIRLOCK? Yeah. Minor characters getting major screentime never works out for them.
I thought her suicide was handled beautifully. Look, I was a fan of Dee at the beginning, and I adored Dee and Billy, but as soon as she tried to get in between my PILOTS! I washed my hands of her. She became so one-dimensional and boring and c'mon, the whole thing with Lee came out of NOWHERE and BILLY DIED and she didn't even wait til his body was cold. Ugh. Good riddance, Dee.
I actually liked her scenes with Lee in this, because they were all trying to cling to something and yeah, I understand that. I liked her pep talk about him stepping up to the plate, and I didn't even mind them saying goodnight, and when she walked into the bunkroom humming, I actually thought Lee was about to follow her in there and do things that would make me have to bleach my eyeballs.
I really liked that she made that choice and said, I am happy in this moment, and I am going to do this and the last thing I will have been is happy and that was so heartbreaking to watch because it made it so much more startling. I knew she was going to do it as soon as she took off her wedding ring, and then there was no hesitation, she picked up that gun and put it to her head and that was it. Felix told her she was glowing. Yes, she was a coward, and yes, suicide is a horrible terrible thing, but what a way to embody all the helplessness and lost feelings that everyone on the ship was experiencing. Dee said frak it and gave up. Plus she knew she would never be as cool as Starbuck. :P
I wanted to give Papadama and Roslin big old hugs. Oh PARENTS! You are not supposed to fall apart! Get it together, please.
I loved the stuff with the Cylons on Earth. Chief seeing himself die. Sammy playing air guitar (Oh man you know all those Cylons did was sit around and play Rock Band and Tory played drums and the Chief sang). And TIGH. AND ELLEN BEING THE FIFTH!!!!!!!
I am not disappointed about Ellen. To be honest, I think anyone would have been a letdown because this reveal has been hyped for YEARS. The reveal never really interested me, just like the final four reveal was like "Oh! Okay. Where do we go from here?" And THAT is what is fascinating to me: the aftermath. What happens now that it has been revealed? What does it mean? What else are we going to learn? It's the fallout from that revelation that gets me going way more than finding out who the fifth was.
OH MAN OH MAN I LOVE MY SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so excited for next week.
Favorite shot: Kara in the Ready Room with her pilots listening to the Admiral, and the camera pans down and she has her chain with her one dogtag and Zak's ring on it. Such a beautiful shot, and I wonder how long it will be before we see the fallout from her findings. Also, good riddance, Leoben. I loved that he looked downright scared and turned tail and ran from Kara, with that look on his face of everything he ever knew being a lie.
Ron, I am on board. Let's do this thing. Keep it coming, and keep it dark, and keep me guessing. And let Kara and Lee work off some steam in the Presidential Office! Seriously.
OMG did I just fangirl like crazy or what? That hasn't happened since Buffy. Wow.

Date: 2009-01-17 10:07 am (UTC)That was insanity. I was totally unspoiled and my friend and I both screamed when Dee shot herself. I was getting pissed that she and Lee were back together because they were just boring and lame and argh. I thought they were leading up to her being the Fifth, that the picture in her locket was going to reveal something about her parentage, I don't know.
I was SO THRILLED when Kara came in to talk to Lee. Whoa, that is a big thing for them. Not only that Kara would talk, but that she would talk about *that* specifically. Old Kara would have held that one close and kept that pain for herself.
I have some friends who are sad because finding Kara's corpse on Earth means that Starbuck isn't REALLY Starbuck but that never occured to me. Did it occur to you? I mean, it's just like the Cylons resurrecting. She's still Kara, just shiny new package. Everything's the same inside, right?
Next friday is too far away.

Date: 2009-01-22 06:24 am (UTC)See? Starbuck CAN grow and change! Now Lee needs to get it together. And then they need to make babies. Yes.
No that never occurred to me. As far as I am concerned, until we are told otherwise, she is still the same Starbuck. There is so much to her story that we don't yet know and I can't wait to find out what it is!

Date: 2009-01-17 02:02 pm (UTC)Wow, I never saw that coming. I really need to catch up.
I'm still upset they killed off Cally... Still, she had a pretty good run for someone who was supposed to be a one-off character in the pilot only.

Date: 2009-01-22 06:25 am (UTC)I never cared one way or another for Cally, and I was happy to see Dee go. Catch up, Mark! It's just SO GOOD.

Date: 2009-01-17 02:43 pm (UTC)ITA. It's been fun to speculate about over the hiatus but the identity of the last cylon is just a means to an end, not an end in itself. It's about what that character brings to the fleet more than who it is.
