You really need 4 feet around it if you want to fly. I have just shy of four and can do MOST of the tricks but not all. That said, if your goal is to do a sexy dance and just show off for your bf, you need almost no room because you need to do no tricks other than dance around, hang on, grind against the pole. Seriously. This is ALL you need for THAT. :-)
