Maybe going around with one of those water sprayers/misters just before you let the roomba run wild will make the air moist enough to let it work properly, although I know cat hair is dire with any sort of hoover.
Display Properties > Screensaver > Power, there's a set of menus that govern power saving in laptops. You can define what brightness you want when the power's connected or disconnected. It's possible the two values have just been transposed somehow. You should be able to adjust them back to how you want them.
